Local brewery celebrates love in Manlius with second annual Pride Festival

t8LVQs47_400x400.jpg

Patrick Griffin of Fayetteville sat in front of Seneca Street Brew Pub in Manlius holding an aggressive but honest sign in his hands. It read “Bigotry Has No Place Here” with the word bigotry written in rainbow lettering. He had heard that a small group of protesters had shown up to harass people attending the second annual Manlius Pride Festival on June 17. Griffin felt he had to do something.

Women-owned breweries in CNY win awards, give back to communities

t8LVQs47_400x400.jpg

Heidi Menikheim knew what it was like to be recognized for her beer. She and her brewery, Seneca Street Brew Pub in Manlius, have won five medals from the New York State Brewers Association since the business opened in 2016. But it wasn’t until this year, after winning the organization’s Women In Beer Scholarship, that she could actually attend the statewide craft beer competition. Winning a sixth medal  — this time in-person — was much more exciting than getting another one in the mail.

How a Baldwinsville mother fought for 30 years to pass a law that might've saved her daughter

Syracuse.com 1.jpg

Lisa Saunders prayed to God that she could love Elizabeth just the way she was — to see her as a little girl and not some hopeless prognosis. Doctors in 1989 told Saunders her daughter would likely never walk, talk or feed herself. Saunders spent the first two months of Elizabeth’s life in a depression. She eventually decided she’d need to focus not on Elizabeth’s disabilities but her will to survive them. Her daughter loved to be held, rocked, and snuggled contentedly on her mother’s lap for hours. She studied her mother’s face with large blue eyes framed by long dark eyelashes. She grinned ear-to-ear when her mother smiled back at her. Saunders decided to take Elizabeth’s care one day at a time, for however long it would last.

Meet the teacher who just became Onondaga County's first living poet laureate

Syracuse.com 1.jpg

Fifteen years ago, Georgia Popoff discovered the Goethe-Schiller monument in Schiller Park in Syracuse and studied its history. The statue of the two famous German poets, dedicated to the park in 1911 and built on an ancient burial ground, honors the German-American population in Syracuse during that time. Popoff, a life-long community poet and writer herself, saw the monument as inspiration. She became excited about uniting the Syracuse writing community through literary arts. It was something a poet laureate should take on. So when legislation was created to apply for Onondaga County’s poet laureate last year, she saw an opportunity.

Is the "She Said" Movie Accurate? Here's What Happened in Real Life

POPSUGAR.png

Dramatizations of real-life events continue to rule the movie and TV landscape in 2022, from true-crime series like "Inventing Anna," "The Dropout," and "Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story" to celebrity biopics like "Blonde" and "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story." Many true-crime stories have been criticized for the glorification of perpetrators at the expense of their victims, but "She Said," the latest true-crime movie that tells the story of how New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey broke the story of Harvey Weinstein's misconduct in Hollywood, avoids this sensationalized storytelling.

I Hope "Selling Sunset" Stops Neglecting Its Most Important Character: Luxury Homes

POPSUGAR.png

I found my dream home while watching season three of "Selling Sunset." The luxurious five-bedroom, six-bathroom mansion — known affectionately as the "Versace house" — sold for $8.95 million in 2021. For me, the most memorable piece of the home wasn't the golden Versace accents on every surface or even the lush views of the surrounding countryside. Instead, it was a statue affixed as a centerpiece in the backyard: a replica of one of the most recognizable works of art in history, "The Rape of the Sabine Women" by Italian sculptor Giambologna.

Here's How The New Scream Is Connected to the Original Franchise

POPSUGAR.png

It's been nearly a decade since Scream 4 came out, so fans may wonder whether the Scream they know and love is still alive in the most recent addition to the franchise that dropped on Jan. 14, especially considering its legendary original director, Wes Craven, passed away in 2015. Its new directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo behind production company Radio Silence who made Ready or Not in 2019, have openly expressed their love and loyalty to the Scream franchise. So, while Scream does explore new aspects of the horror genre to fit the 21st century, you can be sure it still has plenty of connections to the original films that fans will recognize almost immediately.

Here's Why You Needed To Address Its Own Problem with Missing White Woman Syndrome

POPSUGAR.png

If you watch Netflix's You for the stalking, love triangles, sex scandals, betrayals, and surprise murders, you're not alone. Those are all qualities that make for good TV drama, and we watch shows like You as an escape from our own worlds. But as I watched the third season, which dropped Oct. 15, one storyline had me crashing right back to reality. You addressed Missing White Woman Syndrome, a phenomenon that recently resurfaced in American mainstream news coverage after the August 2021 murder of Gabby Petito.
